What is Employer Sponsored Work Visa?

Work in Australia — With a Clear Path to Permanent Residency

Australia’s employer-sponsored work visa system is straightforward in principle: find an Australian employer who needs your skills, have them sponsor you, and work legally in Australia. But what makes it strategically valuable is what happens after the TSS Subclass 482 is one of the fastest stepping stones to Australian permanent residency for professionals who can secure a sponsoring employer.

Types of Employer Sponsored Visas

Main Australia Work Visa Types

Australia offers different employer-sponsored visa options depending on your skills, job position, and long-term goals.

Employer Nomination Scheme — Subclass 186 (PR)

Permanent residency through employer sponsorship. Three streams:

  1. Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) Stream – For TSS 482 holders who have worked for their sponsor for 2+ years in a MLTSSL occupation.
  2. Direct Entry (DE) Stream — For workers who have never held a 482 visa but have a qualifying job offer and skills assessment.
  3. Agreement Stream — For workers in industries covered by a labour agreement.
The ENS is genuine PR — you receive the same permanent residency status as a GSM applicant, without the points competition.

Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) — Subclass 494

A regional employer-sponsored provisional visa (5 years). After 3 years working and living regionally, converts to Subclass 191 permanent visa. High demand for healthcare, construction, and agriculture in regional areas.

Temporary Skill Shortage Visa — Subclass 482 (TSS)

The primary employer-sponsored temporary work visa. Has two streams:

Short-Term Stream (up to 2 years):

  • Occupations on the Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL)
  • Maximum stay: 2 years (renewable once from outside Australia)
  • Does NOT lead directly to employer-sponsored PR

Medium-Term Stream (up to 4 years):

  • Occupations on the Medium Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)
  • Maximum stay: 4 years (renewable)
  • Can lead to Subclass 186 PR after 2 years with same employer
The Medium-Term stream is the strategically superior option for professionals aiming at permanent settlement.
Key requirements for TSS 482:
  • Job offer from an approved Standard Business Sponsor (SBS)
  • Occupation on the relevant skilled occupation list
  • Skills assessment (required for some occupations)
  • English: IELTS 5.0 minimum in each band, or equivalent
  • 2 years of relevant work experience
